Spring (April-May) or early fall (September) offer the best combination of pleasant weather, blooming flowers, and smaller crowds. Weekday mornings are ideal to avoid tour groups. Summer brings the most vibrant gardens but also peak tourist numbers.

Entry to the gardens is completely free, making this an excellent budget-friendly activity. The gardens are stroller-friendly with paved pathways throughout. Note that Sundays the gardens are closed, so plan accordingly.

Gardens are most spectacular from April through October when flowers are in full bloom. Winter visits are possible but gardens are less colorful and playgrounds may be less appealing in cold weather. The Christmas market season (late November-December) brings special festive atmosphere to the palace square.

Cafe Bazar along the Salzach River (5-minute walk) offers traditional Austrian fare with a kids menu and riverside views. For budget-friendly options, the Spar Gourmet supermarket near Mirabell has prepared foods and snacks perfect for a garden picnic.
