Alte Donau is Vienna's beloved recreational lake offering safe, shallow swimming areas perfect for families with children. Entry to most public beaches is free, though some equipped beach areas (Strandbäder) charge 3-6 euros per adult. Parking is available at several lots around the lake (paid). Multiple beach bars and kiosks sell snacks, ice cream, and drinks, but bringing your own picnic is common and allowed.

Best visited May through September when water temperatures are comfortable for swimming (peaks in July-August). Most beach facilities, boat rentals, and waterfront restaurants operate only during summer season. The lake area is accessible year-round for walks but swimming and most amenities close in colder months.
