Praia de Icaraí

Praia de Icaraí is a perfect family beach destination with gentle, calm waters ideal for young swimmers and plenty of space for sandcastle building. The long beachfront promenade offers safe walking and cycling paths, while nearby ice cream shops and restaurants make it easy to spend a full day without leaving the area. With its relaxed atmosphere and stunning views across the bay to Rio, it is less touristy than Copacabana but equally beautiful.

Visit between Tuesday and Thursday mornings (9am to 12pm) for the best experience. Weekends attract large crowds of local families, and afternoons can get very hot. The Brazilian summer (December to March) offers warmest water but also peak tourist season, while fall and spring provide pleasant temperatures with fewer visitors.

The beach is free to access with paid street parking available nearby (expect around 10-20 Brazilian Reais per hour). Numerous restaurants and snack bars line the beach, and most accept credit cards, though having some cash in Brazilian Reais is helpful for ice cream vendors and beach toy sellers.

Year-round destination with warmest water temperatures from December to March (Brazilian summer). April to November offers cooler but still pleasant beach weather with fewer tourists. Avoid visiting during heavy rain season (December to January) when afternoon storms are common. Christmas and New Year periods see huge crowds and festive beach celebrations.

Along the beachfront, you will find numerous family-friendly restaurants serving fresh seafood, pizza, and traditional Brazilian fare with outdoor seating. For a guaranteed kid-pleaser, try one of the many churrascarias (Brazilian steakhouses) or pizzerias within a block of the beach, most offer children's menus and high chairs.
