Minnekhada Regional Park

Minnekhada Regional Park is a stunning 618-hectare wilderness playground where families can explore over 13 km of hiking trails, spot beavers building dams, and discover diverse wildlife including herons, frogs, and if you're lucky, black bears from a safe distance. This accessible nature preserve offers everything from easy marsh boardwalks perfect for strollers to more challenging forest trails, plus a historic lodge and working farm that bring BC's heritage to life.

1. 1.Arrive early (by 8-9 AM) on weekends to secure parking, as the lot fills quickly and there's no overflow parking on the narrow access road.
2. 2.Bring binoculars and a nature journal for kids to document wildlife sightings. The beaver ponds are most active at dawn and dusk.
3. 3.Wear rubber boots or waterproof shoes, especially after rain, as trails can get muddy. The boardwalk sections are stroller-friendly but trails beyond are not.
4. 4.Download a trail map before you go as cell service is spotty. The red and blue marked trails are easiest for younger children.
5. 5.Visit the historic Minnekhada Lodge (only open select days) and the working farm area where kids can see chickens and learn about the property's history.

Visit on weekday mornings (especially Tuesday through Thursday) between 9 AM and noon to avoid weekend crowds and enjoy cooler temperatures. Spring (April to June) offers the best wildlife viewing as migratory birds return and baby animals emerge, while fall brings stunning foliage and fewer bugs.

Admission and parking are completely free. There are basic pit toilets near the parking lot but no concessions, so pack plenty of snacks, water, and sunscreen. The park is largely natural and unstaffed, so come prepared with a first aid kit.

Open year-round, but trails can be muddy and slippery in winter (November to March). Summer months (July to August) can be hot with minimal shade on some trails, so bring sun protection. Spring wildflowers peak in April and May. Winter visits offer peaceful solitude but dress warmly in layers.

Head to downtown Port Coquitlam (10 minutes away) for family-friendly options like White Spot (classic Canadian chain with a kids menu and toy program) or grab fish and chips at Pajo's in nearby Pitt Meadows. Pack a picnic to enjoy at the park's designated areas instead.
