Visit in spring (April-May) or fall (September-October) for comfortable weather and beautiful scenery. Arrive right when gates open at 6:00 AM or after 4:00 PM on weekdays to avoid overwhelming crowds and tour groups that peak mid-morning through early afternoon.

Admission is around 30-60 RMB (approximately $5-9 USD) depending on season, with extra fees for certain pavilions and boat rentals. The complex is vast, so wear comfortable walking shoes and consider bringing a lightweight stroller for younger children, though be prepared for some stairs at various pavilions.

Winter (December-February) can be very cold but less crowded, and if you're lucky, snow creates magical scenery. Summer brings lotus blossoms on the lake but also intense heat and peak tourist crowds. The palace is open year-round with slightly shorter hours in winter months.

Inside the palace grounds, options are limited to small snack vendors. Better to eat before arriving or pack a picnic. Outside the East Gate, you'll find several family-friendly restaurants including local noodle shops and Western chains like KFC within a 10-minute walk.
