Visit on weekday mornings (Tuesday through Thursday) during spring (March-May) or fall (September-November) for comfortable weather and smaller crowds. Arrive right at opening time (8:30am) to see the animals at their most active and beat tour groups.

Entrance fees are approximately 40 RMB per adult (about $6 USD) with discounts for children. Cash or mobile payment (Alipay/WeChat Pay) is preferred, as credit cards are rarely accepted. The zoo is accessible by metro (Line 10 to Shanghai Zoo Station), which is easier than navigating by taxi with a language barrier.

Spring and fall offer the most comfortable weather for walking the expansive grounds. Summer (June-August) can be extremely hot and humid, so bring sun protection and water. Winter visits are possible but some outdoor exhibits may have reduced viewing as animals stay in heated indoor areas.

Element Fresh (international chain with Western-style salads, sandwiches, and smoothies, kid-friendly) is located in nearby Hongqiao area, about 10 minutes by taxi. For a more local experience, Jing'an Kerry Centre mall has a food court with various Asian cuisines and familiar chains like KFC, about 15 minutes away.
