$$Zoo
🕑 2.5 to 3.5 hours👶 Best for ages 2-12. Toddlers and preschoolers love the smaller animals and open spaces to run, while elementary-aged children appreciate learning about wildlife conservation and spotting the bigger animals like elephants and big cats.

About

One of Mumbai's oldest and most beloved green spaces, Veermata Jijabai Udyan (also known as Byculla Zoo) combines a historic zoo with beautifully landscaped botanical gardens. Kids will delight in spotting animals ranging from majestic tigers and leopards to playful monkeys and colorful birds, while the shaded gardens provide a peaceful escape from Mumbai's urban bustle.

Highlights

  • White tiger and leopard enclosures that fascinate kids of all ages
  • Reptile house featuring crocodiles, pythons, and cobras native to India
  • Peaceful botanical gardens with towering trees and tropical plants perfect for shade breaks
  • Bird aviary with colorful parrots and peacocks often roaming freely
  • Victorian-era clock tower and historic architecture creating photo opportunities

Pro Tips

  1. 1.Arrive early (by 9:30am) to see animals at their most active before Mumbai's heat sets in, and to avoid weekend crowds
  2. 2.Bring insect repellent, sunscreen, and plenty of water as shade can be limited in some areas of the zoo
  3. 3.Hire an English-speaking guide at the entrance (budget around 500-800 rupees) who can point out animals and share educational facts
  4. 4.Wear comfortable walking shoes as the grounds are extensive and paths can be uneven in places
  5. 5.Download offline maps of the zoo as cell service can be spotty, and have small bills (rupees) ready for snacks and drinks from vendors

Best Time to Visit

Visit on weekday mornings between October and February when temperatures are cooler (20-30°C) and animals are more visible. Avoid weekends and public holidays when the zoo becomes extremely crowded with local families. The 9am opening time is ideal.

What to Know

Entry fees are very affordable (around 50-100 rupees for adults, less for children, foreigners may pay slightly more). Basic food stalls sell snacks and drinks inside, but selection is limited, so consider bringing packaged snacks. Strollers can navigate most paths but some areas have steps.

Seasonal Notes

Best visited during Mumbai's winter season (October through February) when temperatures are comfortable. Monsoon season (June to September) can make paths muddy and some outdoor exhibits may be partially closed. Summer months (March to May) are extremely hot and humid, making outdoor exploration challenging for young children.
