1. 1.Park at the Elliðaárdalur parking area off Hólmsheidi road for easiest trail access with kids. The lot can fill up on sunny weekends, so arrive before 11am.
2. 2.Bring binoculars for spotting birds and looking for salmon in the stream, especially during spawning season (late summer/fall) when fish are most visible.
3. 3.Pack layers and waterproof jackets even in summer. Icelandic weather changes quickly and the valley can be 5-10 degrees cooler than the city.
4. 4.The shorter southern loop (about 2km) is best for younger children and fully stroller-friendly, while older kids can handle the full 5km loop.

Late May through September offers the warmest weather and longest daylight (nearly 24 hours in June/July), perfect for evening walks when crowds thin out. Weekday mornings are quietest. Winter visits are magical with snow but require proper gear and the 24-hour darkness limits timing.

Completely free to visit with no entrance fees. Parking is free and accessible. There are no cafes or facilities within the valley itself, so pack snacks and water. The main paths are stroller-friendly but restrooms are limited to the parking area.

Accessible year-round, but summer (June to August) offers the best weather and wildlife activity. Salmon spawning in late summer/early fall is spectacular for kids. Winter visits require proper footwear for ice and snow, but the landscape is stunning. Trails can be muddy in spring (April/May) during snowmelt.

Head to the nearby Árbær neighborhood (5-minute drive) for Brauð & Co bakery, known for cinnamon buns kids love, or Krua Thai for family-friendly Asian cuisine. Both are about 3km from the trailhead.
