Tama Zoological Park

Tama Zoological Park offers an authentic Japanese zoo experience with spacious, naturalistic habitats that make it feel more like a wildlife safari than a traditional zoo. Visit on weekday mornings (Tuesday, Thursday, or Friday) to avoid weekend crowds. Spring (March-May) and fall (September-November) offer the most comfortable weather for walking the expansive grounds. Avoid national holidays when the zoo gets very busy with local families.

Admission is approximately 600 yen for adults and 200 yen for elementary students (very affordable). The zoo is closed Wednesdays, so plan accordingly. Food options are available on-site but limited, so consider packing snacks and drinks for younger children.

Open year-round except Wednesdays and during New Year holidays. Summer (June-August) can be hot and humid, so bring sun protection and water. Winter visits are pleasant but some outdoor animals may be less visible. Cherry blossom season (late March-early April) adds beautiful scenery to your visit.

The zoo has several rest areas and a restaurant on-site. Nearby Tachikawa Station (10 minutes by monorail) has numerous family-friendly dining options including conveyor belt sushi restaurants and Japanese curry shops that are very kid-friendly. Alternatively, grab bento boxes from the station before heading to the zoo for a picnic.
