Dehiwala Zoological Gardens

Dehiwala Zoological Gardens is Sri Lanka's largest zoo, home to majestic Asian elephants, Sri Lankan leopards, Bengal tigers, and a fascinating collection of reptiles and aquatic animals. Kids absolutely love the interactive feeding demonstrations throughout the day, where they can watch elephants, sea lions, and other animals up close during scheduled shows that bring the zoo experience to life.

1. 1.Arrive right when gates open at 8:30 AM to see the animals at their most active and avoid the midday heat and crowds.
2. 2.Bring sunscreen, hats, and plenty of water as Sri Lanka's tropical sun is intense and shade can be limited in some areas.
3. 3.Check the feeding demonstration schedule at the entrance and plan your route around the elephant show (usually around 5:15 PM) and sea lion show, which are the biggest crowd pleasers.
4. 4.Wear comfortable walking shoes as the zoo covers 30 acres with hilly terrain in some sections.
5. 5.Exchange currency before arriving as entrance fees are in Sri Lankan Rupees (foreigners pay higher rates than locals, around 3000 LKR for adults, 2000 LKR for children).

Visit on weekday mornings between 8:30-10:00 AM when it's cooler, animals are more active, and local school groups haven't yet arrived. Avoid Sundays and public holidays when the zoo gets extremely crowded with local families. The cooler months from December to March offer the most comfortable weather for walking around.

Entry fees for international visitors are higher than for locals (approximately $15-20 USD for adults). There are basic food stalls inside selling snacks and drinks, but options are limited, so consider bringing your own refreshments. Stroller access is possible but challenging on some pathways.

The zoo is open year-round, but the dry season from December to March offers the most pleasant weather. Monsoon season (May to September) can bring afternoon rains, so bring umbrellas or rain jackets. The zoo remains open during light rain. Avoid visiting during Sinhala and Tamil New Year in mid-April when it's extremely crowded.

Mount Lavinia Beach is just 10 minutes away and has numerous family-friendly restaurants with ocean views, including Golden Mile Beach Restaurant and Cafe Francais, both offering kid-friendly menus with rice and curry, noodles, and Western options. Alternatively, Dehiwala town center has local eateries serving authentic Sri Lankan hoppers and kottu roti.
