Lion Rock

4.7(139 reviews)Adventure
🕑 1.5 to 2 hours for the full hike (up and down), plus time for beach play👶 Best for ages 8 and up. The track includes steep sections, exposed areas, and requires good fitness and sure footing. Younger children who are experienced hikers may manage with close supervision, but the climb is too challenging for toddlers and preschoolers. Teens particularly love the adventure and photo opportunities at the top.

About

Lion Rock is an iconic 101-meter volcanic formation that towers over Piha's famous black sand beach, offering adventurous families a rewarding hike with spectacular coastal views. The 30-40 minute climb features well-maintained tracks, wooden steps, and safety chains on steeper sections, making it achievable for active kids ready for a real outdoor challenge. At the summit, you'll be rewarded with breathtaking 360-degree views of the rugged West Coast beaches and Tasman Sea.

Highlights

  • Climbing to the summit of an actual volcanic rock formation
  • 360-degree views of the dramatic West Coast beaches and Tasman Sea
  • Spotting surfers riding waves at one of New Zealand's most famous surf breaks
  • Exploring Piha's unique black sand beach after the hike
  • Seeing the rugged, wild landscape that featured in many films and TV shows

Pro Tips

  1. 1.Start early morning (8-9am) to avoid afternoon winds and heat, plus you'll have better light for photos and fewer crowds on the track
  2. 2.Wear closed-toe shoes with good grip as the volcanic rock can be slippery, especially after rain. The black sand also gets extremely hot in summer
  3. 3.Bring more water than you think you need. There are no facilities on the track and the climb is more strenuous than it looks
  4. 4.Stay on marked paths and respect safety barriers. The rock faces can be dangerous and the surf below is notoriously treacherous
  5. 5.After your hike, let kids play on Piha Beach, but always swim between the flags. Piha has strong rips and is patrolled only during summer weekends and holidays

Best Time to Visit

Visit between October and April during New Zealand's warmer months, ideally on weekday mornings when the track is less busy. Summer (December to February) offers the best weather but brings more visitors. Avoid windy days as the exposed summit can be unsafe for children in strong gusts.

What to Know

Free to access with parking available at the base near the Piha Surf Life Saving Club. No facilities on the track itself, so use restrooms at the beach before starting. The 45-minute drive from central Auckland is winding and can cause car sickness in sensitive kids.

Seasonal Notes

Accessible year-round, but winter (June to August) brings rain, strong winds, and rougher seas that can make the climb less enjoyable. Summer weekends and New Zealand public holidays get very crowded. The track may close temporarily in extreme weather for safety reasons.

Nearby Eats

The Piha Cafe on Seaview Road offers family-friendly casual dining with burgers, fish and chips, and cabinet food, perfect for refueling after your hike. Alternatively, pack a picnic lunch to enjoy on the beach, but remember to take all rubbish with you as bins are limited.
