Phuket Old Town Festival
First weekend of every month
Season: January – December
Phuket Old Town (Thalang Road area)
About
The Phuket Old Town Festival transforms the historic streets of Thalang Road into a vibrant celebration of Thai-Chinese culture, food, and entertainment every first weekend of the month. Kids will be captivated by colorful street performances, traditional dance shows, live music, and the chance to explore one of Thailand's most photogenic heritage districts when it comes alive with night market energy. It's an authentic cultural immersion that's fun, family-friendly, and offers a wonderful break from Phuket's beaches.
What to Expect
Families can expect bustling pedestrian-only streets lined with food vendors, craft stalls, and cultural exhibits showcasing Sino-Portuguese heritage. The festival features live entertainment including traditional Thai and Chinese performances, street musicians, and sometimes puppet shows or cultural demonstrations. The atmosphere is festive but manageable, with families strolling among the beautifully preserved colonial shophouses adorned with colorful lanterns. Kids can try their hand at traditional crafts, watch artisans at work, and sample endless varieties of Thai street food in a safe, car-free environment.
Highlights for Kids
- Sampling exotic Thai street foods like roti pancakes, mango sticky rice, and colorful Thai desserts
- Watching traditional Thai dance and Chinese opera performances on the main stage
- Exploring the colorful Sino-Portuguese shophouses and taking photos with the famous street art
- Browsing handmade crafts, toys, and souvenirs from local artisans
- Participating in cultural activities like trying on traditional costumes or watching batik painting demonstrations
Pro Tips for Families
- Arrive early (around 5-6 PM when the festival opens) to beat the biggest crowds and secure the best street food before popular items sell out
- Bring small Thai Baht bills (20s and 50s) as many vendors don't have change for large notes and credit cards aren't widely accepted at street stalls
- Download an offline map or screenshot the area beforehand as the historic streets can be confusing to navigate, and have the address of your accommodation in Thai script for taxi drivers
- Visit the iconic photo spots along Soi Romanee and Thalang Road early in the evening when lighting is perfect and before crowds make photos difficult
Best Time to Visit
Arrive between 5:00-6:00 PM when the festival opens for the best experience—the weather is cooler, crowds are lighter, and you'll have first pick of food options. Saturday evening tends to be busier than Sunday, so Sunday is better for families wanting a more relaxed atmosphere. Plan to stay through sunset (around 6:30-7:00 PM) when the heritage buildings and lanterns create magical photo opportunities and the energy peaks without being overwhelming.
Food & Drinks
The festival is a street food paradise with dozens of vendors offering Thai classics like pad thai, satay skewers, grilled seafood, spring rolls, and tropical fruit smoothies. Kid-friendly options include chicken skewers, fried rice, sweet roti pancakes, fresh fruit, coconut ice cream, and familiar items like grilled corn and french fries. Most dishes cost 40-100 THB ($1-3 USD). Bring wet wipes as seating is limited and eating while walking is common. Bottled water is readily available but consider bringing reusable water bottles to refill.
Parking & Access
Parking is extremely limited in Old Town during the festival as streets are closed to vehicles. Your best option is to take a Grab taxi (Thailand's Uber equivalent) directly to Thalang Road and arrange pickup afterward—fares from beach areas run 200-400 THB ($6-12 USD). If driving, use public parking at Ocean Shopping Mall (10-minute walk) or Phuket Weekend Market area. Strollers are not recommended due to crowded conditions and uneven pavement; baby carriers work much better. The festival area is compact and walkable but wear comfortable shoes as you'll be on your feet.
