Saklikent Gorge (Near Kalkan)

Saklikent Gorge offers an unforgettable adventure where families can wade through refreshing mountain streams cutting through towering 18-mile limestone walls that soar up to 300 meters high. Kids absolutely love the thrill of splashing through knee-deep (sometimes waist-deep) cold river water while surrounded by dramatic canyon scenery, making this one of Turkey's most exciting natural playgrounds for active families.

1. 1.Bring water shoes or sturdy sandals with good grip as the rocks are extremely slippery and sharp in places. Regular flip-flops are dangerous here.

3. 3.Arrive before 10am to beat tour groups and enjoy cooler temperatures. The gorge gets crowded and hot by midday in summer.
4. 4.Pack a complete change of clothes for everyone, including underwear and socks. The water is glacier-fed and shockingly cold (around 8-12°C year-round).
5. 5.Consider hiring a local guide for about 50-100 Turkish Lira if you want to venture deeper into the gorge where it gets narrower and more challenging.

Visit May through June or September for the best experience. Water levels are manageable, temperatures are warm but not scorching, and crowds are smaller than peak July-August. Arrive early morning (8-9am) before tour buses arrive from nearby resorts.

While entrance is free, parking costs around 20 Turkish Lira and you'll find locker rentals, waterproof bag rentals, and traditional Turkish meals available at riverside restaurants near the entrance. The first 200 meters of the gorge are accessible, but beyond that requires wading through cold, sometimes chest-deep water.

Open year-round but best visited May through September when weather is warm. Winter months (November-March) are too cold for comfortable wading despite the gorge being technically accessible. Spring may have higher water levels from snowmelt, making it more challenging but also more dramatic. Summer weekends get extremely crowded with tour groups.

Try the riverside restaurants at the gorge entrance serving traditional Turkish gozleme (savory flatbreads), grilled trout caught from local streams, and fresh salads. For a sit-down meal, head 30 minutes back toward Kalkan where family-friendly restaurants line the harbor with pizza, pasta, and Turkish mezze options that appeal to kids.
