The gorge is free to access with several car parks along Karangahake Gorge Road. There are basic toilet facilities but no food vendors, so pack snacks and plenty of water. Some trails involve stairs and uneven ground, making them unsuitable for wheelchairs or strollers.

The gorge is accessible year-round, though winter (June to August) brings rain that can make trails slippery and raise water levels. Summer offers the best swimming conditions but also the most visitors. Check local weather forecasts before visiting, as heavy rain can cause flash flooding in the gorge.

The Waikino Station Cafe, located about 5 minutes away, offers family-friendly meals in a charming historic railway station setting. Alternatively, the town of Paeroa (15 minutes away) has several cafes and the famous L&P bottle monument, plus supermarkets for picnic supplies.
