Pasifika Festival

Annual Pacific Islander cultural festival in March

Season: March March

ASB Showgrounds

About

Pasifika Festival is New Zealand's largest Pacific Islander cultural celebration, transforming ASB Showgrounds into a vibrant village of island nations each March. Kids will be mesmerized by thundering drum performances, graceful traditional dancers in colorful costumes, and the chance to experience authentic Pacific cultures through hands-on activities, crafts, and food from over 11 island nations. This free, family-friendly festival offers an unforgettable cultural immersion that's both educational and enormously fun.

What to Expect

Families can explore multiple village areas representing different Pacific nations including Samoa, Tonga, Cook Islands, Fiji, and more, each featuring live performances, traditional arts and crafts demonstrations, and interactive activities. The atmosphere is lively and welcoming with continuous stage performances of traditional dance, drumming, and contemporary Pacific music throughout the day. Kids can participate in weaving workshops, face painting, temporary tattoo demonstrations (ta moko), learn traditional games, and watch skilled artisans create everything from tapa cloth to woven pandanus baskets. The festival is stroller-friendly with wide pathways between villages, though it can get crowded during peak times.

Highlights for Kids

  • Spectacular Samoan fire knife dancing performances that leave kids absolutely awestruck
  • Hands-on activities like traditional weaving, coconut husking demonstrations, and learning Pacific Island games
  • Vibrant Cook Island drumming and hip-swaying dance performances with elaborately costumed performers
  • Face painting and temporary traditional tattoo (ta moko) designs that kids love showing off
  • The diverse food village where children can try sweet treats like Hawaiian shave ice, Samoan panipopo, and fresh tropical fruits

Pro Tips for Families

  1. Arrive early (gates open at 9am) to explore before the largest crowds arrive mid-afternoon and to secure good viewing spots for the main stage performances
  2. Bring cash as many food vendors and craft stalls don't accept cards, plus an ATM with a NZD$5 fee is available but queues can be long
  3. Pack sunscreen, hats, and refillable water bottles as the event is largely outdoors with limited shade, especially on Auckland's warm March days
  4. Download the festival map and schedule in advance to plan which cultural performances and villages you want to prioritize, as there's too much to see in one visit

Best Time to Visit

Morning arrival between 9-10am offers the best experience for families with young children, as it's less crowded, cooler weather-wise, and kids are fresh for exploring. The main cultural performances typically run from 10am onwards, with spectacular fire knife dancing and larger productions happening in the afternoon. If you can only attend during peak times, arrive after 2pm when some morning crowds have left, though you'll miss some earlier performances.

Food & Drinks

The festival features extensive food offerings from across the Pacific with options ranging from NZD$5-15 per item. Kid-friendly favorites include chop suey, coconut bread (panipopo), fried bananas, tropical fruit cups, and Hawaiian shave ice. For adventurous eaters, try umu-cooked pork (earth oven), raw fish (oka), taro chips, or lu pulu. Most villages have their own food stalls, so you'll find eating options throughout the grounds. Vegetarian options are available but can be limited, so ask vendors. Bottled water and fresh coconut water are widely available to keep kids hydrated.

Parking & Access

ASB Showgrounds is located in Greenlane, about 6km south of Auckland's CBD. Parking is available on-site for approximately NZD$5-10 but fills quickly after 10am, so arrive early or use public transport. International visitors should note that Auckland's AT Metro trains run to Greenlane Station (10-minute walk to venue) from Britomart in the city center. Buses also service the area frequently. The venue is stroller-accessible with paved pathways, though it can get congested during peak times. Consider using baby carriers for easier navigation through crowds. Rideshare services (Uber) operate throughout Auckland and are convenient for families, though expect surge pricing during festival hours.
