Karekare Beach

Activity
🕑 2 to 4 hours👶 Best for ages 6 and up. The rocky terrain, strong surf, and lack of lifeguards make this better suited for older children and teens who can handle unpatrolled beaches. Adventurous families with good supervision can bring younger kids (4-5) for tide pooling during calm conditions, but this is not ideal for toddlers.

About

Karekare Beach offers families an unforgettable West Coast adventure with its dramatic black sand shores, fascinating tide pools teeming with sea life, and striking coastal cliffs that feel like stepping into another world. This rugged beach provides natural exploration opportunities that curious kids will love, from rock pooling to discovering unique geological formations, all set against one of New Zealand's most photogenic coastlines.

Highlights

  • Exploring fascinating tide pools filled with sea stars, anemones, crabs, and small fish
  • Discovering the dramatic black volcanic sand beach and impressive rock formations
  • Walking to Karekare Falls, a beautiful 30-meter waterfall just a short walk from the beach
  • Spotting native birds and searching for unique shells and driftwood along the shore
  • Taking in the stunning scenery made famous by the movie 'The Piano'

Pro Tips

  1. 1.Visit at low tide for the best tide pooling experiences. Check tide times online before you go and aim to arrive 1-2 hours before low tide.
  2. 2.Pack reef shoes or sturdy sandals for everyone, as the black sand gets extremely hot in summer and the rocks can be sharp around tide pools.
  3. 3.Bring all food, drinks, and sun protection as there are no facilities or shops at the beach. The nearest shops are back in Piha or Titirangi.
  4. 4.The surf here is dangerous and not suitable for swimming. Admire the waves from shore and keep children well away from the water's edge.
  5. 5.Download offline maps before heading out as cell phone reception is very limited in the Waitakere area.

Best Time to Visit

Visit on weekday mornings during summer (December to February) for the best weather and fewer crowds. Early morning offers cooler sand, better tide pooling conditions, and magical light for photos. Avoid visiting during or after heavy rain when the access road can be treacherous.

What to Know

Access is free but requires driving a steep, winding gravel road (about 20 minutes from the main highway). There are no lifeguards, shops, or cafes, only basic toilet facilities and limited parking. The beach is not patrolled and swimming is extremely dangerous due to strong rips and surf.

Seasonal Notes

Summer (December to February) offers the warmest weather but hotter sand. Autumn and spring provide milder temperatures ideal for exploring. Winter can be wild and windy with impressive wave watching but dress warmly. The access road can be slippery and challenging after heavy rain in any season.

Nearby Eats

Pack a picnic as there are no food options at Karekare. The closest dining is 15-20 minutes away in Piha (Piha Cafe) or head back to Titirangi village (30 minutes) for family-friendly options like Loaf Artisan Bakery or Titirangi Village Market on Saturdays.
