Camelback Mountain
About
Camelback Mountain is Phoenix's most iconic hiking destination, offering families an unforgettable outdoor adventure with trails ranging from moderate to challenging. While the summit trails are best suited for older kids and teens, the lower portions provide excellent wildlife spotting opportunities and stunning desert scenery that will captivate adventurous families.
Highlights
- ✓Reaching the 2,704-foot summit with 360-degree views of the entire Phoenix valley
- ✓Spotting desert wildlife including lizards, roadrunners, rabbits, and occasionally bighorn sheep
- ✓Rock scrambling sections that make kids feel like real adventurers
- ✓Educational opportunity to learn about Sonoran Desert plants like saguaro cacti and ocotillo
- ✓Sense of accomplishment for kids who complete the challenging climb to the top
Pro Tips
- 1.Arrive at sunrise (parking lots open at 5am) to avoid crowds and the intense Arizona heat, trails can become uncomfortably hot and even dangerous after 10am in summer months
- 2.Park at the Echo Canyon trailhead for the more popular route, or Cholla Trail for a slightly less crowded experience with equally spectacular views
- 3.Bring at least 1 liter of water per person, salty snacks, sunscreen, and a hat, there's virtually no shade on the trails and dehydration happens quickly
- 4.Wear sturdy hiking shoes with good traction as the trails include steep rock scrambles and handrails in some sections
- 5.Download a trail map before you go as cell service can be spotty, and teach kids to stay on marked trails to protect the fragile desert ecosystem
Best Time to Visit
October through April offers the most comfortable temperatures for hiking. Visit at sunrise (best) or before 8am on weekdays to avoid crowds and heat. Summer months (June-August) are not recommended for hiking with children due to extreme temperatures often exceeding 105°F.
What to Know
Parking is free but extremely limited and fills up quickly, especially on weekends. There are no facilities, water fountains, or food available at the trailheads, so come fully prepared. The trails are not stroller or wheelchair accessible.
Seasonal Notes
Winter months (November-March) offer perfect hiking weather with temperatures in the 60s-70s. Spring brings beautiful desert wildflowers in March and April. Summer hiking (May-September) is strongly discouraged with children due to extreme heat; trails may close if temperatures exceed 110°F. Always check weather conditions before heading out.
