Wild Burro Trailhead

Wild Burro Trailhead offers families an authentic Sonoran Desert hiking experience with trails manageable for active kids. The moderate terrain winds through classic desert landscape where children can spot wildlife like desert cottontails, roadrunners, and maybe even the trail's namesake wild burros, all with the dramatic Tortolita Mountains as your backdrop.

1. 1.Start early in the morning (by 7am) especially October through May,desert heat intensifies quickly and there's minimal shade on the trails
2. 2.Bring twice the water you think you'll need (plan for at least 1 liter per person per hour) plus salty snacks to keep energy levels up
3. 3.Wear closed-toe hiking shoes with good grip as the trail has loose rocks and occasional cacti near the path
4. 4.Download a trail map before you go as cell service can be spotty, and consider bringing a basic first aid kit for minor scrapes
5. 5.Turn the hike into a nature scavenger hunt,have kids look for saguaro cacti, cholla, palo verde trees, and animal tracks in sandy sections

October through April offers the most comfortable temperatures for family hiking, with early morning (sunrise to 9am) being ideal year-round. Weekday mornings are less crowded than weekends, and spring (March-April) brings beautiful desert wildflower blooms that kids love.

This is a free, open-access trailhead with limited parking that fills quickly on weekend mornings. There are no facilities, water fountains, or shade structures, so come completely self-sufficient with sun protection, plenty of water, and snacks.

Summer months (June-September) bring extreme heat with temperatures often exceeding 100°F,not recommended for family hiking. Spring wildflower season (March-April) following wet winters offers spectacular blooms. Winter hiking is pleasant with mild temperatures, though bring layers for cooler mornings.

The Ritz-Carlton Dove Mountain is about 5 minutes away with Turquesa restaurant offering upscale casual dining with kids' menus, or head 15 minutes to Marana for more family-friendly options like In-N-Out Burger or local favorite Buon Appetito Italian Restaurant.
