About

Painted Hills Trailhead offers families the perfect blend of outdoor adventure and convenient amenities in Marana's stunning desert landscape. This well-maintained community park features easy hiking trails suitable for little legs, a modern playground for active play, and shaded ramadas where families can relax and picnic while taking in the beautiful Sonoran Desert scenery.

Highlights

  • Modern, well-maintained playground equipment for various age groups
  • Easy, family-friendly walking and hiking trails through scenic desert landscape
  • Covered ramadas perfect for picnicking and shade breaks
  • Beautiful desert scenery with opportunities to spot local wildlife
  • Paved walking paths suitable for strollers

Pro Tips

  1. 1.Arrive early (right when gates open at 5:30 AM in cooler months) to beat the Arizona heat and catch potential wildlife sightings like rabbits and desert birds
  2. 2.Bring plenty of water, sunscreen, and hats - there's limited shade on the trails, though the ramadas provide relief at the park area
  3. 3.Pack a picnic to enjoy under the covered ramadas after hiking, as there are no food vendors on-site
  4. 4.Wear closed-toe shoes and teach kids to stay on marked paths to avoid desert plants with thorns and prickly cacti
  5. 5.Note the 6:00 PM closing time and plan accordingly - gates close promptly daily

Best Time to Visit

October through April during early morning hours (5:30-9:00 AM) offers the most comfortable temperatures for hiking with kids. Weekday mornings tend to be less crowded than weekends, giving families more space to explore.

What to Know

The park is free to visit with convenient parking available on-site. Note that hours are limited (5:30 AM - 6:00 PM daily), so plan your visit accordingly and arrive with water and snacks as no concessions are available.

Seasonal Notes

Best visited October through April when temperatures are mild. Summer months (May-September) are extremely hot - if visiting in summer, come right at opening time and limit your stay to early morning hours only. The desert landscape blooms beautifully in spring (March-April) after winter rains.
