🕑 2-3 hours round trip👶 Best for ages 8 and up. The moderate terrain with steady elevation gain is ideal for older children and teens who have some hiking experience but aren't ready for advanced trails. Younger children with strong stamina and hiking experience may also enjoy it with close supervision.

About

Mummy Mountain offers families a fantastic introduction to Arizona hiking without the extreme difficulty of neighboring Camelback Mountain. The moderate trails reward adventurous kids with stunning panoramic views of Paradise Valley and the surrounding desert landscape, making it an achievable outdoor challenge that builds confidence in young hikers.

Highlights

  • Panoramic views of Paradise Valley and the Phoenix metropolitan area from multiple vantage points
  • Wildlife spotting opportunities including desert birds, lizards, and occasional rabbits
  • Less crowded than nearby Camelback Mountain while still offering a rewarding challenge
  • Beautiful desert flora including saguaro cacti and seasonal wildflowers
  • Sense of accomplishment for kids conquering their first significant Arizona peak

Pro Tips

  1. 1.Start your hike early in the morning (6-7 AM) to avoid the intense Arizona heat and enjoy cooler temperatures, especially crucial in summer months
  2. 2.Bring at least twice as much water as you think you'll need - plan for one liter per person per hour of hiking in warm weather
  3. 3.Wear sturdy hiking shoes with good ankle support as the trail includes rocky sections and uneven terrain
  4. 4.Take plenty of breaks to let kids rest and enjoy the increasingly impressive views as you climb
  5. 5.Download a trail map beforehand as cell service can be spotty on the mountain

Best Time to Visit

October through April offers the most comfortable hiking conditions, with early morning (sunrise to 9 AM) being ideal to avoid heat and afternoon crowds. Weekday mornings are typically less busy than weekends.

What to Know

This is a natural trail with no facilities, so plan accordingly by bringing all necessary supplies including water, snacks, and sun protection. Parking is limited in the residential area surrounding the trailhead, so arrive early.

Seasonal Notes

Best hiking season is October through April when temperatures are moderate. Summer months (June-September) are extremely hot and not recommended for family hikes. Spring offers bonus wildflower blooms after wet winters. Trails may be slippery after rare rain events.

Nearby Eats

Head to The Herb Box in nearby DC Ranch for fresh, healthy post-hike meals with kid-friendly options, or grab burgers and shakes at Shake Shack in Scottsdale Quarter about 10 minutes away.
