🕑 Half day to full day👶 Best for ages 5 and up. Older kids and teens will love the longer hikes and kayaking adventures, while younger children can enjoy shorter beach walks, easy waterfall trails, and exploring tide pools. Some trails have uneven terrain, so sturdy walkers do best here.

About

Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore offers families an unforgettable adventure along Lake Superior's stunning coastline, featuring dramatic sandstone cliffs, pristine beaches, and cascading waterfalls. Kids will be amazed by the colorful rock formations, while families can explore scenic hiking trails, kayak past towering cliffs, or relax on sandy beaches perfect for rock hunting and building sandcastles.

Highlights

  • Colorful sandstone cliffs with streaks of red, orange, white, and green minerals
  • Miners Falls, an easy family-friendly waterfall hike
  • Beach combing for unique Lake Superior agates and colorful stones
  • Boat tours that cruise past the famous cliffs (seasonal, separate cost)
  • Junior Ranger program where kids can earn badges

Pro Tips

  1. 1.Start at the Munising Falls Interpretive Center to get maps, Junior Ranger activity books, and learn which trails are best for your kids' ages and abilities.
  2. 2.Bring layers and waterproof jackets year-round as weather on Lake Superior changes quickly, even in summer.
  3. 3.For the best kid-friendly experience, visit Miners Beach for easy access to colorful rocks and calm waters, or take the short 0.6-mile round trip to Miners Falls.
  4. 4.Pack plenty of water and snacks as there are no facilities or food vendors within the park itself.
  5. 5.Download trail maps before visiting as cell service is spotty throughout the park.

Best Time to Visit

Late June through August offers the warmest weather and all facilities open, though weekdays are less crowded than weekends. Early morning visits provide the best lighting for viewing the colorful cliffs and you'll have trails more to yourself before tour boats and crowds arrive mid-morning.

What to Know

The park is free to enter with parking available at multiple trailheads and beaches. No food services are available within the park, so pack meals and snacks. Some trails can be challenging with steep drop-offs, so always supervise children closely near cliff edges.

Seasonal Notes

The park is open year-round, but winter brings snow and ice making many trails difficult. Peak season is June through September when all visitor services operate and weather is most favorable. Boat tours typically run May through October. Fall colors in late September are spectacular but temperatures drop significantly.

Nearby Eats

Head to Munising (10 minutes away) for Dogpatch Restaurant, a local favorite with burgers, sandwiches, and a kids menu, or try Sydney's Frozen Custard for a post-hike treat the whole family will love.
