Cathedral Rock Trail

FreeAdventure
🕑 2-3 hours including creek play time👶 Best for ages 6 and up. The trail involves some rock scrambling and steep sections that require sure footing, making it ideal for school-age children and teens who enjoy a physical challenge. Active younger kids (4-5) can manage the lower portions and creek play with close supervision, though the summit may be too challenging.

About

Cathedral Rock Trail offers families an unforgettable Sedona adventure with its iconic red rock formations and seasonal creek crossings that kids absolutely love. This moderate 1.2-mile round trip hike rewards young explorers with breathtaking views, fun scrambling opportunities, and the chance to splash in Oak Creek at the trailhead, making it one of the most memorable family hikes in Arizona.

Highlights

  • Shallow Oak Creek crossings and wading area at the trailhead where kids can splash and cool off
  • Fun rock scrambling sections that make kids feel like real adventurers
  • 360-degree panoramic views of Sedona's red rocks from the saddle
  • Incredible photo opportunities with the dramatic Cathedral Rock spires as backdrop
  • Wildlife spotting including lizards, birds, and occasional deer

Pro Tips

  1. 1.Arrive before 7 AM or after 4 PM to avoid crowds and secure parking at the small trailhead lot,it fills up extremely fast, especially on weekends
  2. 2.Bring water shoes or sturdy sandals for creek crossings at the trailhead; kids will want to play in the shallow water before or after the hike
  3. 3.The trail gets very hot with little shade, so pack extra water (at least 1 liter per person), sun protection, and salty snacks for the climb
  4. 4.Turn around at any point if your kids feel uncomfortable, even hiking partway up provides amazing views and photo opportunities
  5. 5.Wear closed-toe hiking shoes with good traction; the red rock can be slippery, especially on the steeper scrambling sections near the saddle

Best Time to Visit

Visit during spring (March-May) or fall (September-November) for comfortable temperatures, with early morning being ideal to beat both crowds and heat. Weekdays are significantly less crowded than weekends. Winter offers cooler hiking but the creek is frigid; summer mornings are possible but can be extremely hot by mid-hike.

What to Know

A Red Rock Pass ($5 daily or $15 weekly) is required and can be purchased at the trailhead or in advance online. Parking is very limited with only about 10-12 spaces at the small lot; arrive early or consider using a ride-share service to avoid parking stress.

Seasonal Notes

Open year-round, but best enjoyed in spring and fall. Summer months (June-August) are extremely hot with temperatures often exceeding 100°F,only attempt early morning if visiting in summer. Winter hiking is beautiful but the creek water is ice-cold. Spring brings higher creek water levels and wildflowers, while fall offers cooler temps and fewer crowds.

Nearby Eats

ChocolaTree Organic Eatery (about 10 minutes away) offers healthy, kid-friendly organic meals with outdoor seating, or grab pizza and sandwiches at the nearby Red Rock Cafe which has a casual family atmosphere and quick service.
