Lake Tegel

Lake Tegel is Berlin's second-largest lake and a family paradise offering sandy beaches perfect for building sandcastles, calm swimming areas ideal for children, and expansive green spaces for active play. Visit on weekday mornings in late spring (May-June) or early fall (September) for pleasant weather, warm enough water, and smaller crowds. Summer weekends draw huge local crowds, especially during hot weather.

The lake itself is free to access, though the main Strandbad Tegel beach charges a small entrance fee (around 5-6 euros for adults, kids often free or discounted). Limited food vendors are available, so bringing snacks and drinks is recommended, especially for picky eaters.

Swimming season runs May through September when lifeguards are present and water temperatures are comfortable. The lake is accessible year-round for walks and playground visits, but water sports and beach facilities close in winter. Autumn offers beautiful foliage for lakeside strolls.

Strandperle Tegel, a casual beachside cafe near the main beach, offers German snacks, ice cream, and cold drinks in a family-friendly setting. For a sit-down meal, head to Seerestaurant Alt-Tegel (10 minutes away) which serves traditional German cuisine with lake views and a children's menu.
