Step aboard the USS Hornet, a massive WWII aircraft carrier turned museum where kids can explore a real Navy ship from bow to stern. With over 400,000 square feet to discover, families can climb into cockpits, check out restored aircraft, try flight simulators, and even explore the sleeping quarters where sailors once lived, making history come alive in the most hands-on way possible.
Visit on weekday mornings (Friday or Monday) right when they open at 10 AM for the smallest crowds and the most personal attention from knowledgeable volunteer docents. Weekends get busier with families, though special programs are often scheduled then.
Admission is $20 for adults, $15 for seniors/youth (5-17), and free for kids under 5. The ship is not fully stroller-accessible due to authentic steep stairs and narrow doorways. There's a small café onboard for snacks, but plan to eat before or after your visit.
Open year-round but closed Tuesday through Thursday. The ship hosts special overnight camping programs for scouts and youth groups throughout the year. October features popular Halloween ghost tours (better for older kids and teens). Summer can get hot on the exposed flight deck, so morning visits are best.
