Visit on weekday mornings (8-10am) during spring or fall for the best experience. Summer brings biggest crowds and limited parking, while morning visits offer calmer waters, better visibility for snorkeling, and more active sea lions before the heat of the day.

Parking is free but extremely limited on surrounding streets; consider using paid lots nearby ($15-25) or taking a rideshare. There are public restrooms in Scripps Park above the cove, but no food vendors at the beach itself, so pack snacks and plenty of water.

Summer (June-August) brings warmest water temperatures but largest crowds. Spring and fall offer excellent conditions with fewer visitors. Winter features dramatic waves (great for watching, not swimming) and gray whale migrations (December-April). Avoid May-June pupping season if concerned about aggressive sea lions protecting pups.

The Cottage La Jolla (5-minute walk) offers kid-friendly breakfast and lunch with outdoor seating and a casual atmosphere. For quick bites, try Harry's Coffee Shop, a classic diner with pancakes and burgers that kids love, just a few blocks away on Girard Avenue.
