Cabrillo National Monument

4.8(12,589 reviews)$Park
🕑 3-4 hours for families who want to explore the tide pools, tour the Old Point Loma Lighthouse, walk the Bayside Trail, and visit exhibits. Minimum 2 hours if focusing on just highlights.👶 Best for ages 4 and up. Younger children (4-7) love the tide pools and searching for crabs and sea stars, while older kids (8+) appreciate the historical significance, longer coastal trails, and whale watching opportunities. The lighthouse stairs and rocky tide pool areas may be challenging for toddlers.

About

Cabrillo National Monument offers an incredible combination of hands-on tide pool exploration, a historic lighthouse to tour, and some of the best whale watching spots in Southern California. Kids can climb the lighthouse stairs, search for sea creatures during low tide, and learn about Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo's historic landing through interactive exhibits, all while taking in breathtaking Pacific Ocean views that stretch to Mexico on clear days.

Highlights

  • Tide pool exploration with sea anemones, crabs, sea stars, and octopuses
  • Climbing the historic Old Point Loma Lighthouse and seeing the restored 1880s keeper's quarters
  • Whale watching overlooks with views of gray whale migration (winter/spring)
  • Junior Ranger program with activity booklets and badge earning
  • Coastal trails with panoramic views of San Diego Bay, Coronado, and downtown skyline

Pro Tips

  1. 1.Visit during low tide (check tide charts online before going) for the best tide pool experience, the pools are only accessible at tides below 2.5 feet.
  2. 2.Arrive early (right at 9 AM opening) to secure parking and avoid crowds, especially on weekends. The lot fills up quickly during whale watching season.
  3. 3.Wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes with good grip, the tide pool rocks are slippery and sharp. Bring layers as the Point can be windy and 10-15 degrees cooler than inland San Diego.
  4. 4.Stop at the visitor center first to get Junior Ranger activity booklets (free) and check the daily schedule for ranger-led tide pool talks.
  5. 5.Bring binoculars for whale watching from the overlooks and pack a picnic to enjoy at the scenic tables near the lighthouse.

Best Time to Visit

December through March for gray whale migration (peak viewing), or June through September for tide pooling when low tides often occur during visitor hours. Weekday mornings offer smaller crowds and easier parking. Sunset visits aren't possible due to 5 PM closing, so plan for morning or early afternoon.

What to Know

Entrance fee is $20 per vehicle (valid for 7 days) or free with National Parks Pass. Limited food available (small visitor center snacks only), so pack lunch and plenty of water. All trails and the visitor center are accessible, but the tide pools require navigating uneven, rocky terrain.

Seasonal Notes

Gray whale migration peaks mid-January through February with 10,000+ whales passing by. Tide pools are best accessed in summer months when extreme low tides occur during park hours. The monument occasionally closes during extreme weather or high surf advisories. Check the National Park Service website before visiting during winter storms.
