Blue Sky Ecological Reserve

4.7(856 reviews)FreeNature
🕑 2.5-4 hours depending on which trail you choose and how often you stop for nature exploration👶 Best for ages 5 and up. The main trails are manageable for elementary-aged kids who can handle 2-4 mile hikes, while older children and teens will enjoy the longer loop options. Preschoolers can handle shorter segments but may need carrier backups for longer distances.

About

Blue Sky Ecological Reserve offers families over 700 acres of accessible nature trails perfect for introducing kids to hiking and wildlife watching. The seasonal waterfall (flowing winter through spring) creates a magical destination point, while the gentle terrain through oak woodlands makes this ideal for young hikers ready to explore beyond neighborhood parks.

Highlights

  • Seasonal waterfall flowing over rock formations (winter/spring)
  • Oak woodland trails with plenty of shade and interesting trees to explore
  • Wildlife viewing opportunities including birds of prey, rabbits, and deer
  • Kid-friendly creek crossings on stepping stones near the waterfall
  • Wide, well-maintained trails suitable for families new to hiking

Pro Tips

  1. 1.Arrive early (gates open at 8am) to snag parking in the small lot,it fills up quickly on weekends, especially during waterfall season (January-April)
  2. 2.The Green Valley Trail to the waterfall is the most kid-friendly route at about 4 miles round-trip with minimal elevation gain
  3. 3.Bring binoculars for wildlife spotting, kids love looking for hawks, woodpeckers, and if lucky, bobcats or deer along the trails
  4. 4.Pack plenty of water and snacks as there are no facilities or shade structures; the reserve is completely natural with vault toilets only at the trailhead
  5. 5.Download an offline trail map before visiting as cell service is spotty throughout the reserve

Best Time to Visit

Winter through spring (December-April) offers the best experience when the seasonal waterfall is flowing and temperatures are mild. Weekday mornings are least crowded. Avoid summer afternoons when temperatures soar and the waterfall is dry.

What to Know

Admission is completely free with no reservations required. Parking is limited to a small dirt lot, so carpooling is recommended on busy weekends. Dogs are allowed on leash, but there are no water fountains, playgrounds, or visitor centers, this is primitive hiking only.

Seasonal Notes

The waterfall typically flows from late December through April depending on rainfall. Summer months (June-September) can be extremely hot with temperatures exceeding 90°F and no waterfall, making this less ideal for young children. Spring wildflowers (March-April) add extra beauty to hikes.
