


Mission Bay is a 4,600-acre aquatic playground with calm, wave-free bay waters that feel like a giant swimming pool,perfect for nervous swimmers and toddlers taking their first dips. Kids can paddleboard, kayak, build sandcastles on numerous beaches, feed ducks, play at waterfront playgrounds, and enjoy the grassy picnic areas without any ocean current concerns.
Weekday afternoons are peaceful. Summer mornings can be busy with water sports lessons and camps. Sunset is beautiful from the west-facing beaches.
Food: Limited food directly at most beaches. The Bahia Resort and Catamaran Resort have restaurants. Better to bring a picnic or drive to nearby Pacific Beach or Mission Beach (5 minutes). · Parking: Free parking lots throughout Mission Bay at various beaches and parks. Rarely completely full except on major holiday weekends. · Bathrooms: Public restrooms at most major access points including Bonita Cove, De Anza Cove, and Tecolote Shores. Basic facilities but adequate. · Strollers: Very stroller-friendly with paved paths circling much of the bay. Easy beach access at most locations without steep stairs. · Accessibility: Excellent accessibility with paved paths, accessible parking at all major areas, and easy water access at several beaches.
Water is warmest July through September. Winter months are quieter and perfect for bird watching,many migratory birds visit. The bay hosts the Mission Bay Over-the-Line Tournament in summer (can be crowded). Christmas lights boat parade in December is magical for kids. Less affected by marine layer fog than ocean beaches.
Mission Bay itself has limited dining,pack a picnic to enjoy at the many grassy areas with BBQ pits. Drive 5 minutes to Pacific Beach or Mission Beach for dozens of casual family restaurants, tacos shops, and ice cream. The Bahia Resort's Cafe Bahia offers waterfront dining on-site.
La Jolla Shores offers a mile-long stretch of soft sand with protected, mellow waves that make it San Diego's best beach for families learning to surf or boogie board. The wide beach transitions to a grassy park area with playgrounds, picnic tables, and Kellogg Park, while the calm waters attract friendly leopard sharks in summer and sea lions year-round.

The USS Midway Museum lets kids explore a real aircraft carrier that served for 47 years, with 60+ exhibits and 29 restored aircraft to climb into and around. Children can experience what life was like for sailors at sea, sit in actual cockpits, and try flight simulators that put them in the pilot's seat.
The San Diego Zoo is a world-renowned 100-acre wildlife wonderland that captivates kids with over 3,500 rare and endangered animals from around the globe. Families love the included Skyfari aerial tram that glides over treetops for incredible views, plus the free guided bus tour that helps little legs cover this expansive zoo while learning fun animal facts from knowledgeable guides.
