Lands End Trail

FreeAdventure
🕑 1.5-3 hours depending on how far you hike and how long you explore the Sutro Baths ruins👶 Best for ages 5 and up. The trail has some uneven terrain and steep drop-offs that require supervision, making it ideal for kids who can follow directions and stay on marked paths. Older elementary and middle school kids particularly enjoy the shipwreck exploration and dramatic coastal scenery.

About

Lands End Trail offers families a stunning 3.4-mile coastal adventure with jaw-dropping views of the Golden Gate Bridge, rugged cliffs, and the Pacific Ocean. This relatively easy trail features fascinating shipwreck remains, a welcoming visitor center at Lands End Lookout, and multiple turnaround points perfect for families with varying energy levels and abilities.

Highlights

  • Exploring the eerie concrete ruins of the historic Sutro Baths and tide pools
  • Searching for remains of several shipwrecks visible from viewpoints along the trail
  • Spectacular Golden Gate Bridge photo opportunities from unique coastal perspectives
  • The Labyrinth viewing area with its rock maze overlooking the ocean
  • Mile Rock Beach access for beach combing and tide pooling at low tide

Pro Tips

  1. 1.Start at the Lands End Lookout visitor center for clean restrooms, a café, and trail maps before heading out, facilities are limited along the trail itself
  2. 2.Bring layers! San Francisco's coastal fog can roll in quickly, making temperatures drop 15-20 degrees even on sunny days
  3. 3.Take the short detour to the Sutro Baths ruins, kids love scrambling around these historic remains and tide pools at low tide
  4. 4.Park at the Lands End Lookout parking lot (680 Point Lobos Avenue) which is closest to amenities, or try the Legion of Honor lot for easier parking on weekends
  5. 5.Download an offline map as cell service can be spotty along the trail

Best Time to Visit

Visit on weekday mornings (9-11am) for thinner crowds and clearer skies before afternoon fog rolls in. Spring (March-May) offers the best weather with wildflowers blooming, while summer can be surprisingly foggy and cold despite being peak tourist season.

What to Know

The trail and parking are completely free. The Lands End Lookout café offers light snacks and hot drinks, but pack your own picnic for longer hikes. While strollers can handle the initial paved section, most of the trail is dirt and uneven, bring a baby carrier for little ones.

Seasonal Notes

Winter brings dramatic storm-watching opportunities but trails can be muddy and potentially closed during heavy rains. Spring wildflowers peak in April-May. Summer is coldest and foggiest (bring jackets!). Fall offers the warmest, clearest weather from September through November.

Nearby Eats

Louis' Restaurant (902 Point Lobos Ave) is a classic diner just steps from the trailhead serving hearty breakfasts and burgers with ocean views. The Beach Chalet Brewery & Restaurant (1000 Great Highway) offers family-friendly dining with a kids menu and stunning beach views about 10 minutes away.
