Step back in time at the hillside estate where America's only Nobel Prize-winning playwright, Eugene O'Neill, wrote some of his greatest works. This intimate historic site offers guided tours through Tao House, O'Neill's beautifully preserved home, where families with older children can explore 1930s architecture, learn about theater history, and enjoy the peaceful natural surroundings of the surrounding preserve.
Visit on weekday mornings (Wednesday or Thursday at 10 AM) for smaller tour groups and a more intimate experience. Spring and fall offer the most comfortable temperatures for the outdoor portions of the tour and the surrounding nature preserve is especially beautiful.
Admission is free but advance reservations are mandatory. The site is only accessible via shuttle van from downtown Danville (no direct driving to Tao House). Limited restroom facilities are available, and there is no food service on site, so plan accordingly.
The site is closed Mondays and Tuesdays year-round. Hours may be reduced during winter months, and tours can be cancelled during extreme weather. Check the National Park Service website before planning your visit as schedules can vary.
Downtown Danville (where you'll park for the shuttle) has many family options including Blackhawk Grille for casual American fare and pizza, or Peasant & Pear for families wanting a nicer sit-down meal after your tour.
