Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge offers families an incredible opportunity to see bison, deer, prairie dogs, and over 330 bird species just minutes from downtown Denver. With 15+ miles of trails, an engaging visitor center, and special Junior Ranger programs, kids can experience authentic wildlife encounters while learning about conservation in a safe, accessible setting.

4. 4.Pack all snacks and water as there are no food vendors on-site, and use restrooms at the visitor center before heading out on trails
5. 5.Visit the prairie dog colony near the visitor center first,it's a guaranteed hit with young kids and requires minimal walking

Visit early morning (7-9 AM) or late afternoon (4-6 PM) on weekdays for optimal wildlife viewing and smaller crowds. Fall (September-October) offers comfortable temperatures, active wildlife preparing for winter, and beautiful golden prairie grasses that kids love running through.

Admission and parking are completely free. The visitor center has restrooms and water fountains, but there are no food concessions, so pack your own snacks and meals. Trails are mostly flat and stroller-friendly, though the Wildlife Drive is best explored by car.

Open year-round with varying hours by season. Winter offers unique snowy landscapes and less crowded trails, though some paths may be icy. Spring brings wildflowers and baby animals. Summer can be hot with afternoon thunderstorms, so visit early. Some trails may close temporarily during nesting season (March-July) to protect wildlife.

Head to Fat Sully's Pizza (about 15 minutes away) for New York-style slices kids love, or visit Stuft Food Emporium in nearby Stapleton for build-your-own mac and cheese bowls and a casual family atmosphere.
