Smithsonian National Zoological Park

The Smithsonian National Zoo offers an incredible FREE day out exploring over 2,000 animals across 163 acres in the heart of Washington DC. 2. 2.Download the free Smithsonian Zoo app before you go to navigate the hilly terrain efficiently and catch feeding times and keeper talks.
3. 3.Park at the Connecticut Avenue entrance lot early (it fills by 10 AM on weekends) or take the Metro to Woodley Park station to avoid parking hassles entirely.
4. 4.Bring a wagon or be prepared for hills,the zoo is built on a slope, so plan to start at the top exhibits and work your way down to save energy with kids.
5. 5.Pack snacks and refillable water bottles; while there are food stands, they can be pricey and lines get long during peak times.

Weekday mornings during spring (April-May) or fall (September-October) offer the best experience with comfortable weather, active animals, and smaller crowds. Avoid summer afternoons when it's hot and packed with tourists, and aim for Tuesday-Thursday when school groups are less common.

Admission is completely FREE, but timed-entry passes are required and should be reserved online in advance. Parking costs $30 for cars ($25 if prepaid online). The zoo has multiple food pavilions, and most paths are stroller and wheelchair accessible, though the terrain is hilly.

The zoo is open year-round, but some outdoor exhibits close during extreme winter weather. Holiday lights and ZooLights (late November-early January) transforms the zoo into a magical evening experience. Summer brings extended hours and special programming, but also the biggest crowds and heat.

Mama Ayesha's Restaurant (authentic Middle Eastern, very family-friendly) and Duke's Counter (gourmet burgers with a kids' menu) are both within a 10-minute drive on Connecticut Avenue. The Cleveland Park neighborhood just south has numerous casual dining options perfect for hungry families.
