🕑 3-4 hours👶 Best for ages 4 and up. Young children love spotting wildlife along the shorter trails and climbing on the lighthouse grounds, while older kids and teens enjoy the longer hiking and biking trails, birdwatching opportunities, and photography. Toddlers in strollers can handle the paved Lighthouse Road, though may not have the patience for extended wildlife viewing.

About

Saint Marks National Wildlife Refuge offers families 70,000 acres of unspoiled coastal wilderness just south of Tallahassee, where kids can spot alligators, manatees, and hundreds of bird species while exploring easy hiking trails. The historic St. Marks Lighthouse serves as a stunning backdrop for family photos, and the flat, well-maintained paths make this refuge accessible for strollers and young walkers eager to discover nature.

Highlights

  • Historic St. Marks Lighthouse, a picture-perfect 1831 structure where kids can explore the grounds
  • Wildlife spotting opportunities including alligators, manatees, dolphins, bald eagles, and deer
  • Easy Lighthouse Road trail perfect for families with scenic marsh views
  • Visitor Center with educational exhibits, touch tanks, and kid-friendly learning activities
  • Multiple hiking and biking trails of varying lengths through diverse coastal habitats

Pro Tips

  1. 1.Bring binoculars and a wildlife identification guide, kids love checking off animals they spot, especially during fall and spring migration when birds are abundant
  2. 2.Visit the Visitor Center first to get activity booklets for kids and learn which trails have recent wildlife sightings
  3. 3.Pack bug spray (especially in summer), plenty of water, and sun protection, shade is limited on many trails
  4. 4.The Lighthouse Road is a flat, easy 1.4-mile drive or walk perfect for families with young kids; park at the lighthouse for the shortest walk
  5. 5.Download the refuge map beforehand as cell service can be spotty, and arrive with a full tank of gas as there are no services inside the refuge

Best Time to Visit

Visit October through April for the most comfortable weather, fewer bugs, and peak bird migration. Weekday mornings offer the best wildlife viewing with fewer crowds, and the cooler temperatures make hiking more enjoyable for kids. Avoid summer afternoons when heat and mosquitoes are intense.

What to Know

Entry is $5 per vehicle (valid for 7 days) or free with an America the Beautiful pass. There are no food vendors or restaurants inside the refuge, so pack snacks and meals. Restrooms are available at the Visitor Center and lighthouse area. Most trails are natural surfaces, but the main lighthouse road is stroller-friendly.

Seasonal Notes

Fall and spring offer peak birdwatching during migration seasons. Summer can be very hot and buggy, making early morning visits essential. Winter provides the most comfortable hiking temperatures and excellent wildlife viewing. The refuge is open year-round from sunrise to sunset, though the Visitor Center has limited hours (check ahead).

Nearby Eats

Head to nearby St. Marks village (5 minutes away) for Riverside Café, a casual waterfront spot with outdoor seating, burgers, and seafood that welcomes families. For a quicker option, stop at Springs of St. Marks for sandwiches and snacks before entering the refuge.
