Hitchcock Nature Center

Hitchcock Nature Center offers families 1,000+ acres of stunning Loess Hills landscape to explore together, with over 10 miles of hiking trails ranging from easy nature walks to more challenging treks. The visitor center provides interactive exhibits and outdoor education programs that make learning about local ecosystems fun, while wildlife viewing opportunities include spotting deer, turkey, and dozens of bird species along the trails.

1. 1.Start at the visitor center to pick up trail maps and check which wildlife has been spotted recently,staff are incredibly helpful with recommendations based on your kids' ages and energy levels
2. 2.The observation tower offers breathtaking views with much less effort than the hiking trails, making it perfect for families with varying fitness levels
3. 3.Bring binoculars for kids to borrow,wildlife viewing becomes much more exciting when they can see birds and deer up close
4. 4.Wear sturdy shoes as trails can be steep and uneven in places; the Loess Hills terrain is unique but requires proper footwear
5. 5.Visit after a rain for the best chance to see wildlife coming out, but note that trails can be muddy and slippery

Early morning (7-9 AM) or late afternoon on weekdays offers the best wildlife viewing opportunities and fewer crowds. Spring (April-May) and fall (September-October) provide the most comfortable temperatures for hiking and the most active wildlife, plus beautiful seasonal colors.

Admission is free, though there's a small fee for some special programs. Parking is plentiful at the visitor center. No food service is available on-site, so pack snacks and water for the trails.

Open year-round, but trails may be icy or snow-covered in winter (December-February),bring appropriate gear or stick to shorter trails. Spring wildflowers (April-May) and fall foliage (October) are spectacular. Summer can be hot and humid, so bring extra water and plan morning visits.

Head to Upstream Brewing Company in nearby Omaha (about 20 minutes away) for a family-friendly brewpub with burgers, pizza, and a kids menu, or try Dixie Quicks in Council Bluffs for casual Tex-Mex that kids enjoy.
