Spring (April-May) and fall (September-October) offer the most comfortable temperatures for outdoor exploring, with stunning tulip displays in spring and colorful foliage in fall. Weekday mornings are least crowded, giving your family more space to enjoy the butterfly wing and gardens at your own pace.

Admission runs about $10 for adults with reduced pricing for children (kids 3 and under are free). Free parking is available on-site, and while there's no on-site café, you can bring snacks to enjoy in designated areas or visit nearby Ames restaurants just minutes away.

While open year-round, outdoor gardens are most spectacular from April through October. The indoor Butterfly Wing and conservatory provide excellent winter alternatives. Special seasonal events include Garden Glow (holiday lights in December), Pumpkin Days in fall, and fairy garden workshops in summer.

Head to Hickory Park Restaurant (10 minutes away) for family-friendly BBQ with a kids' menu and casual atmosphere, or try Cornbred (downtown Ames) for comfort food including mac and cheese and chicken tenders that kids love.
