Tammany Trace Bike Trail

The Tammany Trace is a beautifully maintained 31-mile paved rail-trail that's ideal for family biking adventures of any distance. Kids will love the flat, safe path that winds through charming downtown Covington and continues into peaceful countryside dotted with bridges, shaded tree canopies, and wildlife sightings,making it perfect for beginners and experienced young cyclists alike.

1. 1.Start at the Covington Trailhead where you'll find ample parking, restrooms, and bike rentals if you don't have your own equipment
2. 2.Bring plenty of water and snacks,there are rest areas along the trail, but not many food options once you leave the Covington area
3. 3.Visit during weekday mornings for the quietest experience; weekends can get busy with cyclists, especially near downtown
4. 4.Download an offline trail map as cell service can be spotty in rural sections
5. 5.The trail passes through five communities, so you can easily plan a one-way ride with a car shuttle or turn around at any point

Fall through spring (October-May) offers the most comfortable temperatures, with fall foliage being especially beautiful. Weekday mornings are ideal for avoiding crowds, while early mornings or late afternoons in summer help beat the Louisiana heat.

The trail is completely free to use with multiple trailheads offering parking. Bike rentals are available at Brooks' Bike Shop near the Covington Trailhead. The paved surface is stroller and wheelchair accessible throughout.

The trail is open year-round. Summer months (June-August) can be extremely hot and humid,plan early morning rides. Spring offers wildflowers and comfortable temperatures. Winter is mild and pleasant for biking, though occasional cold fronts may require layers.

The English Tea Room in downtown Covington offers kid-friendly sandwiches and treats just blocks from the trailhead. For casual pizza and pasta, try Abita Brew Pub which welcomes families and has a relaxed atmosphere perfect for post-ride meals.
