The Tammany Trace is a beautifully maintained 31-mile paved rail-trail that winds through the Louisiana Northshore, offering families a safe, car-free path for biking, walking, and rollerblading. With multiple access points connecting charming communities like Mandeville, Covington, and Abita Springs, you can choose short family-friendly segments or longer adventures, all surrounded by gorgeous oak canopies and scenic wetlands that showcase the best of Louisiana's natural beauty.

1. 1.Start at the Mandeville Trailhead which has ample parking, clean restrooms, and easy access to bike rentals at nearby shops if you don't have your own equipment
2. 2.The 5-mile stretch between Mandeville and Fontainebleau State Park is perfect for beginners and offers beautiful lakeside views without being too challenging for little ones
3. 3.Bring quarters for the vintage Coca-Cola machine at the Abita Springs trailhead,a fun surprise treat for kids after a good ride
4. 4.Pack plenty of water and snacks as shade can be sparse in some sections, especially during midday, and there aren't many vendors directly on the trail

Early mornings (7-10am) or late afternoons (4-6pm) during spring and fall offer the most comfortable temperatures and beautiful lighting. Weekday mornings are less crowded than weekends, giving families more space to ride at their own pace.

The trail is completely free to use with multiple parking areas along the route. Restrooms are available at major trailheads but can be spaced several miles apart, so plan bathroom breaks accordingly, especially with younger children.

Spring (March-May) and fall (October-November) offer the most pleasant weather. Summer can be very hot and humid,go early if visiting June through August. The trail is open year-round and rarely affected by weather closures, though check conditions after major storms.

Stop at Abita Brew Pub in Abita Springs (family-friendly with a kids menu and root beer on tap) or The Barley Oak in Mandeville for wood-fired pizza that kids love. Both are close to trailheads and welcome sweaty cyclists.
