Cane River Creole National Historical Park

Visit in spring (March-May) or fall (October-November) for the most comfortable weather and beautiful grounds. Weekends offer more programming options, but weekdays (Wednesday-Thursday) provide a quieter, more intimate experience. Arrive when they open at 9:00 AM to beat the heat and have more time to explore both plantation sites.

Admission is FREE, which makes this an excellent budget-friendly family outing. The park includes two separate sites (Oakland and Magnolia plantations) about 2 miles apart, so plan to drive between them. Restrooms and parking are available at both locations.

Summer (June-August) can be very hot and humid, so early morning visits are recommended. The park is open year-round except Mondays and Tuesdays. Special programs and events are often scheduled during Black History Month (February) and throughout the spring and fall.

Head to nearby Natchitoches (about 15 minutes away) for family-friendly options like Mama's Oyster House for casual seafood or Merci Beaucoup for po'boys and burgers. Don't miss trying a famous Natchitoches meat pie at one of the local shops in the historic downtown district.
