Festa del Naviglio Grande

Annual celebration along Naviglio Grande canal with markets and entertainment

Season: June June

Naviglio Grande

About

The Festa del Naviglio Grande transforms Milan's historic canal district into a vibrant celebration of local culture, food, and crafts each June. Families will love strolling along the picturesque waterway while kids enjoy street performers, live music, and the festive carnival atmosphere. This authentic Italian festival offers a wonderful opportunity for children to experience Milanese culture beyond the typical tourist attractions.

What to Expect

Expect a lively, bustling atmosphere along the historic Naviglio Grande canal with hundreds of market stalls selling antiques, crafts, artwork, and local products. Street performers, musicians, and entertainers create a carnival-like environment throughout the day and evening. The canal-side setting provides a scenic backdrop with outdoor dining, gelato stands, and plenty of space for families to wander. The festival typically runs for several days, with crowds increasing significantly in the evenings when the canal is beautifully illuminated.

Highlights for Kids

  • Watching street performers, jugglers, and musicians perform along the canal banks
  • Choosing fresh gelato from multiple artisan gelaterias while sitting canal-side
  • Exploring colorful market stalls filled with handmade toys, crafts, and vintage treasures
  • Seeing the historic canal illuminate at sunset with reflections dancing on the water
  • Tasting traditional Italian street food like panzerotti, focaccia, and fresh pizza al taglio

Pro Tips for Families

  1. Visit during daytime hours with young children to avoid the heaviest evening crowds and secure easier canal-side seating at restaurants
  2. Bring cash (euros) as many small vendors and food stalls don't accept credit cards, and ATMs can have long queues during peak times
  3. Download an offline map of the Navigli district beforehand, as the winding canal paths can be confusing and cell service may be spotty in crowds
  4. Allow children to pick out a small souvenir from the artisan stalls early in your visit to avoid meltdowns later when they're tired

Best Time to Visit

Early to mid-afternoon (2-5 PM) offers the best balance for families—stalls are fully set up, crowds are manageable, and there's enough energy without the late-night party atmosphere. Sunday afternoons tend to be busiest but also have the most complete lineup of performers. If visiting with older children who can handle later hours, arrive around 6 PM to see the canal lights come on, creating a magical atmosphere, then leave before the adult nightlife crowd arrives around 9-10 PM.

Food & Drinks

The festival features abundant Italian street food including pizza slices, arancini (rice balls), panzerotti (fried calzones), porchetta sandwiches, and fresh pasta dishes. Multiple gelato shops and dessert stalls offer kid-friendly sweets. Canal-side restaurants set up outdoor seating, though these fill quickly—consider grabbing street food and finding a spot along the canal wall to picnic. Bottled water and soft drinks are available throughout, but bring refillable water bottles as prices at vendor stalls can be high. Most food vendors accept cash only.

Parking & Access

Parking near Naviglio Grande during the festival is extremely challenging—street parking fills early and restricted traffic zones (ZTL) are enforced. Best option for families is taking Milan's Metro to Porta Genova station (green M2 line), then a 5-minute walk to the canal. Trams 2, 9, and 14 also serve the area. The canal-side paths are cobblestone and can be crowded, making umbrella strollers difficult to navigate—baby carriers work better for infants and toddlers. If driving is necessary, park at a metro station outside the city center and take public transport in.
