Somerville Community Path

The Somerville Community Path is a beloved multi-use paved trail that offers families a safe, car-free space for biking, scootering, and walking through the heart of Somerville. Stretching through multiple neighborhoods, this well-maintained path connects several excellent playgrounds and parks, making it perfect for turning a simple bike ride into an adventure with multiple stops for play and exploration.

Weekday mornings or weekend mornings before 11am offer the most space for young riders still building confidence. Spring through fall provides ideal weather, though summer evenings (after 6pm) also bring a lively community atmosphere with lighter crowds than midday.

The path is completely free to use and fully paved for strollers, bikes, and wheelchairs. Street parking is available at various access points including Davis Square, though spaces can be limited on weekends. No food vendors along the path, so pack snacks and water.

Open year-round and plowed in winter, though best enjoyed spring through fall. Gorgeous fall foliage viewing in October. The path can be icy in winter months despite plowing, so use caution. Summer brings the most activity and occasional community events along the route.

Diesel Cafe near Davis Square offers pastries and kid-friendly lunch options with outdoor seating. JP Licks ice cream (also in Davis Square) is the perfect reward after a bike ride and has been a local family favorite for decades.
