Seneca Creek State Park

1. 1.Arrive early on weekends (before 10am) to snag a picnic pavilion near the playground and avoid parking lot crowds, especially during spring and fall.
2. 2.Bring water shoes or old sneakers for creek play,kids will inevitably want to wade in Seneca Creek, and the rocky bottom requires footwear.
3. 3.The Lake Shore Trail (0.9 miles) is stroller-friendly and offers the easiest family hike with beautiful lake views and wildlife spotting opportunities.
4. 4.Pack bug spray during summer months and always check for ticks after hiking,the wooded areas are gorgeous but tick-active from May through September.
5. 5.Download a trail map before you go, as cell service can be spotty in remote areas of the park.

Visit on weekday mornings or early weekend mornings (8-10am) for the most peaceful experience. Spring (April-May) and fall (September-October) offer the most comfortable temperatures and stunning scenery, while summer is perfect for creek play but can be crowded on weekends.

Entry fee is $3 per person on weekends and holidays ($5 for out-of-state visitors), free on weekdays. Ample parking is available at multiple lots throughout the park. No food concessions on-site, so pack snacks and lunch. Restroom facilities available near main picnic areas.

The park is open year-round, dawn to dusk. Spring wildflowers bloom March-April, making trails especially scenic. Summer offers the best creek play but brings crowds on hot weekends. Fall foliage peaks in mid-October. Winter hiking is peaceful but trails can be muddy or icy; the lake sometimes freezes for scenic views but ice fishing is not permitted.

Rio Grande Cafe (15 minutes away) offers Tex-Mex favorites with a full kids menu and quick service. For a casual family meal, Founding Farmers in nearby Potomac serves farm-to-table comfort food with excellent kid options and a welcoming atmosphere for families.
