★4.6(309 reviews)FreeNature
🕑 2-4 hoursđŸ‘ļ Best for ages 5 and up. The easier trails like Red Run and Choate Mine are perfect for elementary-aged children who can handle 1-2 mile walks, while older kids and teens interested in nature and science will love exploring the diverse ecosystem and learning about the area's mining history. Preschoolers can manage shorter trail sections but may need to be carried on rougher terrain.

About

Soldiers Delight Natural Environment Area offers families a chance to explore one of Maryland's most unusual ecosystems,a rare serpentine barrens with open meadows, rocky outcrops, and over 39 rare plant species. With 7 miles of well-marked hiking trails ranging from easy to moderate, kids can learn about unique geology and ecology while spotting colorful wildflowers, butterflies, and wildlife in this 1,900-acre natural wonderland.

Pro Tips

  1. 1.Stop by the visitor center first to pick up trail maps and let kids see the educational displays about serpentine ecology,it makes the hike much more engaging when they know what to look for
  2. 2.Wear sturdy closed-toe shoes as the rocky, uneven terrain can be challenging; avoid sandals or flip-flops
  3. 3.Bring a nature journal or camera for kids to document the rare wildflowers and unusual rock formations, spring through early summer offers the best wildflower viewing
  4. 4.Pack plenty of water and snacks as there are no facilities along the trails, and much of the area offers little shade on sunny days
  5. 5.Download or print the trail map before visiting as cell service can be spotty in the area

Best Time to Visit

Visit in spring (April-June) for spectacular wildflower blooms, or fall (September-October) for comfortable temperatures and beautiful foliage. Weekday mornings are quietest, while weekends can draw more nature enthusiasts. Avoid visiting midday in summer as there's limited shade and trails can get very hot.

What to Know

Admission is free with ample parking at the visitor center. There are no restrooms along the trails (only at the visitor center), no food or drink available on-site, and trails are natural surface so strollers are not recommended.

Seasonal Notes

Spring (late April through June) is peak wildflower season and the most popular time to visit. Summer can be extremely hot with limited shade on prairie trails. Trails remain open year-round, but winter visits offer a starkly beautiful landscape. Educational programs are offered periodically, check the Baltimore County website for scheduled nature walks and family programs.
