Visit on weekday mornings during spring or fall for the most peaceful experience and stunning foliage. Summer offers the warmest weather but brings more crowds, while early morning visits any day provide the best opportunities for wildlife spotting.

Entry to the forest is completely free, though some developed recreation areas may charge day-use fees. The visitor center is only open weekdays, so plan accordingly if you want maps or information. Bring your own food and plenty of water, as services are limited within the forest.

The forest is accessible year-round, with each season offering unique experiences. Spring brings wildflowers and baby animals, summer is ideal for swimming and camping, fall features spectacular foliage, and winter offers cross-country skiing and snowshoeing opportunities. Note that the visitor center is closed weekends year-round.
