The trail is open year-round, though spring through fall are most popular. Summer can be hot, so plan for early morning visits. The trail is occasionally used for cross-country skiing in winter, though snow and ice make it less suitable for young cyclists. Autumn offers spectacular leaf-peeping opportunities in October.

Downtown Lake Orion (near the north trailhead) offers family-friendly options including Sagebrush Cantina for casual Mexican fare and Kruse & Muer on Main for a slightly nicer meal. Both have kids' menus and outdoor seating perfect for post-trail dining.
