Fenner Nature Center offers 134 acres of pristine nature preserve right in Lansing, perfect for families seeking outdoor adventure without the long drive. Kids can explore five miles of easy hiking trails, cross wooden boardwalks over wetlands, and discover local wildlife while learning about Michigan ecosystems through hands-on interpretive programs.

1. 1.Stop by the Visitor Center first to grab a trail map and ask about any animals recently spotted on the trails. Staff are incredibly helpful and can point kids toward the best wildlife viewing areas.
2. 2.Bring binoculars and a nature journal. The trails are excellent for bird watching, and kids love documenting their discoveries of insects, plants, and animal tracks.
3. 3.Wear waterproof boots if visiting after rain. The boardwalks stay dry, but some trail sections can get muddy, especially in spring and fall.
4. 4.Visit on weekday afternoons for the quietest experience. Weekend mornings can be busier with family groups and nature program participants.
5. 5.Pack bug spray during warmer months. The wetland areas attract mosquitoes, but they're worth braving for the amazing frog and turtle sightings.

Early morning on Saturday or Sunday (9:00 AM opening) offers the best wildlife viewing when animals are most active, plus cooler temperatures in summer. Spring and fall provide the most comfortable hiking weather and excellent opportunities to see migrating birds.

Admission is completely free, making this an excellent budget-friendly outing. The preserve has free parking on-site, and while there are no food facilities, picnic areas are available for families who bring their own snacks.

Open year-round with beautiful experiences each season: spring wildflowers and baby animals, summer butterfly gardens, fall colors and migration, winter animal tracking in snow. Note that Monday closures apply all year. Winter visits require appropriate cold-weather gear, but snowshoeing the trails is magical.
