Little Traverse Wheelway

The Little Traverse Wheelway offers families a scenic, paved 26-mile trail system perfect for biking, walking, or rollerblading together along the shores of Little Traverse Bay. With multiple access points and flat terrain, families can customize their adventure from short 1-2 mile outings to longer explorations, all while enjoying stunning lake views and fresh northern Michigan air.

1. 1.Start at Bayfront Park in Petoskey for easy parking, restrooms, and a playground to burn off extra energy before or after your ride.
2. 2.The section between Petoskey and Harbor Springs is especially scenic and about 8 miles round trip, perfect for elementary-aged kids.
3. 3.Bring a small backpack with water, snacks, and basic bike repair tools since some stretches are away from town amenities.
4. 4.Look for the multiple beach access points along the trail where kids can take breaks to throw stones in the water.
5. 5.Visit on weekday mornings for the least crowded experience, especially during summer tourist season.

Late spring through early fall (May to October) offers the best weather, with summer mornings providing cooler temperatures and fewer crowds. Weekdays are ideal for avoiding peak bike traffic, especially in July and August.

The trail is completely free to use with multiple parking areas along the route. While there are some facilities near access points in Petoskey and Harbor Springs, bring your own snacks and water for longer stretches between towns.

Best enjoyed from late April through October. The trail can be used year-round, but winter conditions may make it challenging for biking. Fall offers beautiful foliage views, while summer provides the warmest weather and full access to beach areas.

Stop at Beards Brewery in Petoskey for a family-friendly atmosphere with kids' menu and outdoor seating, or grab ice cream at Kilwins in downtown Petoskey just off the trail.
