Entry is free to the state recreation area, though a Michigan Recreation Passport ($12 for residents, $34 for non-residents) is required for vehicle entry. Facilities include restrooms, picnic areas, and camping sites, but no food concessions, so pack meals and plenty of snacks and drinks for the day.

Best visited late May through early September when water temperatures are warm enough for comfortable swimming. The recreation area remains open year-round for winter activities like snowshoeing and cross-country skiing, but beach amenities and many facilities close after Labor Day. Camping season typically runs May through October.
