Spring and fall offer the best wildlife viewing during bird migrations, with cooler temperatures perfect for hiking. Visit Wednesday through Friday mornings when it's less crowded than weekends, and wildlife is most active in the early hours.

Admission and parking are completely free. The visitor center has restrooms and educational exhibits, but there are no food vendors on-site, so pack snacks and water. Trails range from easy boardwalks to more rugged paths.

The refuge is open year-round with trails accessible in all seasons. Spring (April-May) and fall (September-October) offer spectacular bird migrations. Winter provides cross-country skiing and snowshoeing opportunities. Note that the visitor center is closed Monday-Tuesday year-round.

Mall of America (just 2 miles away) has numerous family-friendly dining options including Rainforest Cafe and Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. For a quicker bite, Chipotle and Panera Bread are located within a mile of the refuge entrance.
