Jockey's Ridge State Park

Jockey's Ridge State Park features the tallest living sand dune system on the East Coast, creating a massive natural playground where kids can run, jump, roll, and explore to their hearts' content. 1. 1.Bring plenty of water and sunscreen,there's zero shade on the dunes and the sand reflects intense heat, especially in summer.
2. 2.Visit early morning or late afternoon to avoid peak heat and catch the most spectacular lighting for photos; sunset is particularly magical.
3. 3.Wear closed-toe shoes or sandals you don't mind getting sandy,the sand gets extremely hot midday and can burn little feet.
4. 4.Let kids bring plastic sleds or boogie boards to slide down the dunes for added fun (no special equipment needed).
5. 5.Stop by the visitor center first for educational exhibits about the ecosystem and to ask rangers about current wind conditions if you're interested in kite flying.

Visit during spring (April-May) or fall (September-October) for comfortable temperatures and smaller crowds. Early morning or late afternoon any time of year offers cooler sand and stunning views, with sunset being the most popular time for spectacular colors over Roanoke Sound.

Admission is completely FREE, making this an excellent budget-friendly adventure. Parking is available at the main lot off Carolista Drive, and clean restrooms and water fountains are located at the visitor center.

Open year-round, but summer brings the hottest sand temperatures (visit early or late in the day). Winter offers cooler climbing conditions but bring jackets for windy conditions. The park occasionally closes temporarily during severe weather or extreme wind events.
