Pioneers Park Nature Center

Pioneers Park Nature Center offers families an incredible opportunity to explore authentic Nebraska prairie landscapes and observe native wildlife,all completely free! Kids can hike scenic trails, spot bison and elk from safe viewing areas, and discover hands-on exhibits in the interpretive center that bring the natural world to life.

1. 1.Arrive right when they open at 9:00 AM on weekdays to have the trails mostly to yourselves and catch wildlife at their most active
2. 2.Start at the interpretive center to pick up a trail map and let kids see the indoor exhibits, then head outside to spot the real animals
3. 3.Bring binoculars for kids to get a closer look at bison, elk, and birds from the designated viewing areas
4. 4.Pack bug spray during summer months and dress in layers as prairie trails offer limited shade
5. 5.Visit the nearby Pioneers Park main area afterward for playgrounds and picnic spots to round out your outdoor day

Spring (April-May) and fall (September-October) offer the most comfortable temperatures for hiking and active wildlife. Weekday mornings are least crowded, while Sunday afternoons (when they open at noon) tend to be busier with families.

Admission is completely free, making this an excellent budget-friendly option for families. Parking is available on-site at no cost, but there are no food vendors, so pack snacks and water for your visit.

Open year-round with reduced Sunday hours (12:00-4:30 PM). Spring brings baby animals and wildflowers, summer offers full programming but can be hot, fall features beautiful prairie grasses, and winter provides a peaceful snowy landscape experience though trails may be icy.

Head to Misty's Steakhouse (about 10 minutes away) for a family-friendly sit-down meal, or grab quick bites at Runza (a Nebraska favorite) just 5 minutes from the park for their famous sandwiches and kid-pleasing menu.
